Holiness in Exile: What It Means to Be Set Apart
Holiness—it’s a word that can feel intimidating. Some think of it as perfection, while others see it as simply being different. But what does holiness actually mean for God’s people living in a world that often pulls them away from Him?
In this episode of the Welcome to the Table podcast, we explore what holiness in exile looks like—how God’s holiness is central to who He is, and how His people are called to reflect that holiness even when surrounded by a culture that doesn’t follow Him.

God’s Holiness: Set Apart and Perfect
The Bible teaches that holiness is not just something God does—it’s who He is. In Isaiah 6:3, the angels cry out:
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory."
To be holy means to be completely set apart, pure, and distinct. This is why God cannot tolerate sin—it is completely opposed to His nature.
But holiness isn’t just God’s attribute—it’s also His expectation for His people:
📖 1 Peter 1:15-16 – “Just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
From the very beginning, God’s people were called to reflect His holiness. Israel was meant to be a nation set apart from the other nations, just as the Church is meant to be set apart today. But how do we actually do that?
Holiness in Exile: How Do We Live Set Apart?
In exile, Israel was constantly surrounded by pagan cultures that didn’t follow God. Yet, faithful men like Daniel, Isaiah, and the prophets stood firm—they lived holy lives even when everything around them pushed them to compromise.
So how do we live set apart today in a culture that often conflicts with God’s truth?
1. Holiness Means Standing Firm in a World That Compromises
Daniel refused to eat the king’s food or bow to idols. Isaiah boldly proclaimed God’s truth even when Israel didn’t want to hear it. They chose obedience over cultural acceptance.
Today, the same challenges exist. We live in a culture that constantly pushes values that go against God’s Word—whether it’s redefining morality, promoting self-centeredness, or silencing biblical truth. Holiness means making intentional choices to stay faithful.
📖 Romans 12:2 – “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
💡 Try this: Identify one area where you’ve been conforming to cultural pressure rather than standing firm in holiness. What’s one change you can make to realign with God?
2. Holiness is Demonstrated in Community
Holiness isn’t meant to be lived out alone—it’s something we pursue together. In exile, the Israelites remained a distinct community, holding on to their identity even in foreign lands.
Today, the Church is called to be a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9). That means we need:
✔ Godly relationships that encourage holiness
✔ Accountability to stay faithful when it’s hard
✔ A community that strengthens our walk with Christ
📖 Exodus 19:6 – “You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”
💡 Try this: Are you actively involved in a church or Bible study where holiness is encouraged? If not, take a step toward building a godly community.
3. Holiness Requires Daily Surrender, Not Just One-Time Commitment
Too often, we think of holiness as a one-time decision, but the Bible teaches it’s a daily process.
Daniel didn’t pray once—he prayed daily even when it meant risking his life. Isaiah didn’t just say “yes” to God once—he remained faithful even when people rejected his message.
📖 1 Peter 2:9 – “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
💡 Try this: Choose one daily habit that helps you pursue holiness—whether it’s prayer, fasting, or making God-honoring choices in your work and relationships.
The Challenge: Will You Live Set Apart?
Holiness isn’t about legalism or perfection—it’s about reflecting God’s character in a world that desperately needs to see Him.
So ask yourself:
👉 Where is God calling me to stand firm?
👉 How can I be a light in my community?
👉 What daily habits will help me stay set apart for Him?
